Physiological Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (PICSI) in Delhi
Physiological intracytoplasmic sperm injection (PICSI) is a technique that helps to extract healthy sperm for performing Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) technique. In this treatment, the sperm is placed in hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance found in the human body. The treatment selects the sperm that is able to bind with HA. It is a non-invasive step performed on a semen sample and a part of the ICSI process. The process helps to select the best sperm with good motility and morphology and is then injected into the egg. It is known that only a mature sperm is able to bind with the hyaluronic acid or oocyte complex to fertilize the female egg.
Males with poor sperm samples have a greater degree of immature or defective sperm. It is to note that immature sperm might show proper motility and morphology, but they have higher levels of damaged DNA, and IVF, these sperm undergo fertilization. They can result in poor embryo quality and miscarriage or loss of pregnancy. Hence, PICSI helps to select the best mature sperm for injection to achieve a healthy pregnancy.
The expert embryologist at Dr. Sowjanya Aggarwal IVF Clinic, Delhi distinguishes the healthy mature sperm from immature sperm with damaged DNA or with the wrong number of chromosomes. They will then use mature sperm to inject them directly into the healthy mature egg, which helps increase the chances of successful fertilization, implantation, and achieve a healthy pregnancy.
The mature sperms have less chromosomal abnormalities than immature sperms. The PICSI technique helps select the best healthy and mature sperm, which makes it a superior technique compared to ICSI treatment. The technique also helps to separate the DNA fragmented sperm from the normal sperms.
PICSI is recommended for
- Patients with a history of poor embryo development
- Male partner with high fragmentation in their sperm DNA
- Couples with a history of poor or low fertilization
- Females suffering from recurrent miscarriages
The sperm that are able to bind to HA is more likely to have less DNA damage, and have normal chromosome complements.
