In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a helpful fertility treatment for men, women, and same-sex people that are suffering from infertility issues. IVF uses the latest and advanced tools and is the most effective treatment for infertility, which is based on assisted reproductive technology (ART). IVF can be a preferred choice to help a woman at a successful rate. There are various steps involved in the IVF method. During IVF, multiple eggs are stimulated with the help of medications such as gonadotropins. Gonadotropins are similar to FSH (natural hormones). Ultrasound tests are conducted to monitor the growing follicles containing eggs. The follicles are retrieved at the right time after their successful growth. Then collected eggs are mixed with sperm for fertilization. The resulting embryo may take 5-6 days for growth and then are cryopreserved or placed into the woman's uterine. Certain tests such as blood tests for hormones and complete health and imaging of the ovaries, uterus, and tubes are recommended prior to the IVF method.

Procedure:

Five basic steps of an IVF cycle are as follows:

  • Fertility medications: To boost ovaries to produce more eggs, certain fertility medications are given to the woman. This causes the production of certain eggs. The transvaginal ultrasounds method is conducted for testing ovaries regularly in this step and hormone level through a blood test.
  • Egg retrieval: Eggs are removed from the follicles after successful egg stimulation. In this step, eggs are removed from the follicles of the woman’s body. In this, a transvaginal ultrasound is used to guide a needle attached with a suction tool to retrieve eggs from the follicles
  • Sperm Retrieval: During the day of egg retrieval, a semen sample will be provided by the male partner. Sperm will be collected from the semen sample and further prepared for inseminating with the eggs.
  • Fertilization: Eggs and healthy sperms are mixed together. The female egg is fertilized with the male’s sperms in a lab. The injection of sperms can also be used into the egg if the chance of fertilization is low.
  • Embryo transfer: The division of fertilized eggs produces embryos. The developed embryo is properly tested. Normal embryos contain several certain eggs that are still dividing. The embryo is then transferred into the uterus of the woman. A catheter is used to guide the eggs. The embryos are inserted into the female’s vagina via the cervix and up into the womb. It may take 6-10 days for embryo implantation in the uterine lining. Successful embryo implantation and growth in the lining of a woman’s womb result in a successful pregnancy.
